Traditional Rice Dal Soft Spongy Idli

Idli is a famous recipe from south India made using rice and black gram / urad dal.idli can be a healthy breakfast recipe for even weight loss.

Ingredients :- ( Serves 36 )

  • 1 cup Rice / Chawal
  • 1+1/2 cup Split Black Gram / Urad dal
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Onion seeds / Kalonji
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp Chilli paste
  • Oil to grease


  1. Thoroughly rinse rice & dal one to two times and keep them separately soaked in about 2 cups of water for about 4 hours.
  2. Grind dal and rice to get a thick.
  3. Mix both the batters together and keep it to ferment for about 8 hours or overnight.
  4. After 8 hours beat the batter to make it airy adding salt,chilli and Onion seeds.
  5. Keep about two cups of water to boil in electric cooker or pressure cooker.Add the batter to greased idli mould.
  6. Place the moulds in cooker and let it to steam for about 12 min.
  7. Cool and de mould to serve with Sambar rasam & coconut chutney.

Tips :-

  • While making ildli in pressure cooker remove the whistle and rubber tube.keep heat over medium.
